Symbolism
|
Symbolism, which is difficult to separate from Art Noveau, was an artists' notion which endured the whole of the 19th century. Its characteristic is the contradiction to the respective reigning art style, like Rationalism, Realism or Naturalism. By these means, Symbolism creates a new counter-theory against each reigning style level and makes the representors of Symbolism outsiders. Symbols serve as means of expression and create mystic and religious relations. Therefore it became a main theme of Symbolists to deal with mystic-spiritual contents like humans who, in a world of dreams and desires, are dominated of irrational powers like Death and Eros.
